Whenever my son and I go out for an early morning drive, we always see--here and there--an abandoned house, greatly deteriorated and all covered in vines. Often furniture left out on the front porch has rusted and the wooden steps are rotting. Maybe no one was left in the family to inherit the property, so no one is taking care of it any more. In Japan, reportedly whole villages have been abandoned. That is the legacy of families who had kept reproducing for generations, then just stopped having children.
My son has just sent me this message about a day back in August:
More recently, on Oct.7, we drove over to a nearby state park, now completely empty on a rather dreary autumn day. Here below are some photos my son took there.A long-time friend who, like me, had visited Cuba during the Fidel Castro era, just sent me this message:
Sad news from Cuba, as usual. The food situation is getting worse, and prolonged power outages occur frequently, which makes it hard to refrigerate food. There is even talk of a famine as the regime begs its allies for food shipments. This fiasco is occurring in a country which once supplied much of the western world's sugar! Dios mio, yet the bulk of Cubans continue to complain bitterly in private while refusing to take any action to change things. Ay Cuba, como siempre!
She’s doing well at her job with the DC Government. She works with elder care and finds it quite satisfying, especially when she gets out of the office which is a lot. It seems she wants to be staying in Washington for the time being and has decided to start house hunting, actually apartment hunting as houses are now completely unaffordable. I am very proud of her. I know she’d be looking out after you if you were still there. She actually makes me miss Washington more than anything else.
Trump's effort to get a Navy crowd to boo the name of Barack Obama fell flat when no one responded. Barack Obama was actually a very popular president who had served 2 terms. So Donald Trump ended up being the only one actually booing him. There would have been lots of boos if folks had been asked to boo Trump himself, one of our country's least popular presidents, someone who has never won even 50% of the vote. (It's rather pitiful that the man craves so much to be admired, even adored, but still falls short,)
