Every life tells a story

Whenever my son and I go out for an early morning drive, we always see--here and there--an abandoned house, greatly deteriorated and all covered in vines. Often furniture left out on the front porch has rusted and the wooden steps are rotting. Maybe no one was left in the family to inherit the property, so no one is taking care of it any more. In Japan, reportedly whole villages have been abandoned. That is the legacy of families who had kept reproducing for generations, then just stopped having children.

My son has just sent me this message about a day back in August:

More recently, on Oct.7, we drove over to a nearby state park, now completely empty on a rather dreary autumn day. Here below are some photos my son took there.

A long-time friend who, like me, had visited Cuba during the Fidel Castro era, just sent me this message:

Sad news from Cuba, as usual. The food situation is getting worse, and prolonged power outages occur frequently, which makes it hard to refrigerate food. There is even talk of a famine as the regime begs its allies for food shipments. This fiasco is occurring in a country which once supplied much of the western world's sugar! Dios mio, yet the bulk of Cubans continue to complain bitterly in private while refusing to take any action to change things. Ay Cuba, como siempre!

Here below is another recent message, this one from a former neighbor about his daughter who works in elder care in Washington, DC. He recently visited her there.
My friend is married to a woman born in Mexico who prefers to live in her native country, especially now with Donald Trump in the US presidency, So he will be going back there soon. I likewise miss living in Washington, DC.

She’s doing well at her job with the DC Government. She works with elder care and finds it quite satisfying, especially when she gets out of the office which is a lot. It seems she wants to be staying in Washington for the time being and has decided to start house hunting, actually apartment hunting as houses are now completely unaffordable. I am very proud of her. I know she’d be looking out after you if you were still there. She actually makes me miss Washington more than anything else.

Trump tried to goad the Navy into booing "Barack Hussein Obama, but was met mostly with silence..

"Trump’s Attempt to Goad Navy Into Booing Obama Met With Awkward Silencehttps://www.thedailybeast.com//trumps-attempt-to-goad-navy-into-booing-obama-met-with-awkward-silence/?via=ios

Trump's effort to get a Navy crowd to boo the name of Barack Obama fell flat when no one responded. Barack Obama was actually a very popular president who had served 2 terms. So Donald Trump ended up being the only one actually booing him. There would have been lots of boos if folks had been asked to boo Trump himself, one of our country's least popular presidents, someone who has never won even 50% of the vote. (It's rather pitiful that the man craves so much to be admired, even adored, but still falls short,)

Mr. Trump has been threatening to revive the 1807 Insurrection Act, which would allow him to deploy the US military inside the country.

Authorities charge man with sparking deadly January wildfire that leveled LA neighborhood

Many people were killed or injured, whole neighborhoods were leveled, and effects of the devastation
still persist. The perpetrator fled across the country, but has now been found.
California has no death penalty, but life in prison would not seem to provide sufficient punishment
or deterrence in a case like this.

Israeli prime minister Bejamin Netanyahu has recommended Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace
Prize
How's that for "birds of a feather"? Trump has often declared that he really, really wants that prize,
which he apparently feels he richly deserves.

US has given at least $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel since war in Gaza began, report says

Now Netanyahu has formally nominated Trump for the coveted Nobel award, and Trump seems to
think he has a good chance of actually winning it.

Odds makers give Trump a 2% chance of winning the Nobel, about same odds as for

22-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Thunberg now says she was tortured by Israeli authorities after her arrest.

In a relatively short time, Israel has gone from victim to perpetratrator in the court of world public

opinion

My readers don't need to hear my many complaints about how frustrating it is to post on this blog,
Efforts to correct sudden quirks often only end up making them even worse.

But, once again, I am very grateful to have this free platform, still trusting that it proves interesting and
informative to all of you. And thanks also to the many folks who have wirtten to me, some of whom I've
tried to answer here.
