Events & Milestones

Starting out this time with a colorful image posted by its creator on the Capitol Hill neighborhood website. Thank you, neighbor!

                                                                And here’s a local sunset.

Hispanic heritage month started on Sept. 15 and extends to Oct. 15, a rare commemoration that spans 2 consecutive months. I celebrate it as an honorary Latina and Spanish speaker. (Below, photos from my recent Honduras trip.)

Peace Corps, Meet our 4,000th Response Volunteer!
Peace Corps Response is a program that recruits former volunteers for service of 3 to 12 months, but I haven’t seen any announcements yet for 3-month assignments. I could do 3 months in a Spanish-speaking country, but not be away from home for any longer.

Washington Gas has been harassing me for years, most recently threatening to cut off my gas service on Sept. 15. Company literature has repeatedly stressed that the meter is its sole responsibility, don’t touch the meter, leave it alone, but the gas company keeps trying to put the onus of a meter’s malfunction some years ago on me and assessing me a made-up amount, with arbitrary penalties added this year for non-payment. I’d requested a hearing from the Office of the People’s Council in June, but my case was closed without a hearing, so I’ve asked once more for a hearing, but cannot access my file. Meanwhile, the gas is still on. Any advice on successfully pursuing this matter would be most welcome.

Disease experts have warned that Covid in one form or another is likely to stay around for years to come. Because of lockdown fatigue, many countries, including the US, are gradually opening up anyway, letting us all take our chances after being vaccinated. But not so in China, where it all began, where mandatory lockdowns have been trying to totally eradicate the virus there, a probably hopeless task. I took my own chances recently by going to Honduras, despite being at a vulnerable age, but I didn’t get sick. Traveling by private car, not on commercial buses, certainly helped.

The anniversary of 9/11 has come and gone again, an event that took place while I was in the Peace Corps in Honduras. I happened on that day to be at Peace Corps headquarters in Tegucigalpa, where our country director told us to stay put until he gave us the all-clear a few days later.

Vision Zero adopted by DC and other major cities aims to improve pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety and reduce vehicle crashes. By 2024, Washington, DC will endeavor to reach zero fatalities and serious injuries to travelers through more effective use of data, education, enforcement, and engineering.

Insider, A Caribbean nation will vote on removing King Charles III as head of state, its PM says, as Queen's death sparks new debate on impact of colonialism Antigua and Barbuda, a commonwealth country and former colony of the British empire, will hold a referendum on becoming a republic and removing King Charles III as the head of state, its prime minister announced.

What if British royals now decided to just resign en masse and live like all the rest of us, perhaps with only special guards around their modest private residences? They might then get regular jobs or pensions while turning their palaces into paying tourist spots, awarding the earnings to causes of their choosing, perhaps even to Corgi breeding and protection? Royalty everywhere is becoming anachronistic. losing support and adulation, but royals will probably hang on as long as possible to enjoy the deference and financial benefits.

Queen Elizabeth died at Balmoral castle in Scotland, a residence with surrounding grounds far more extensive than any one human being would ever need.

The queen apparently had often enjoyed horseback riding around that rural estate. The horses, of course, were tended and fed by servants. Lots of pomp and circumstance has been involved in carrying her casket and in carrying out her funeral. Many people everywhere admired the British queen. (My own sister shares her first name, Elizabeth.) But is royal privilege becoming outdated? Support for the monarchy will wane now that Charles has replaced his mother as Britain’s supreme monarch. But Charles may have some surprises in store.

Britain’s new king is a fairly competent amateur artist, painting mostly landscapes and castles in watercolor, with exhibits and sales whose proceeds have gone to charity. Here is his rendering of a castle where his maternal grandmother often liked to stay.

Charles has waited for years for this moment. His mother declined to retire. He reportedly has already dismissed about 100 staff who served him as prince after moving into the role held by his mother, thereby taking on many of her own staff. He might also get rid of some royal castles while he’s at it. When he curses out a leaky fountain pen, that’s now become world news.

Not only are blockchain technologies and crypto currencies replacing dollars and cents, but paper bills and coins are also becoming obsolete, though eventually may become collectors’ items. Some banks, like Wells Fargo, do not even accept cash deposits. US Treasury is considering bringing out a digital dollar.

Sexual assault in the military—mostly against women--was probably less common when service units were divided by gender.

Sen. Mitch McConnell has already been in office for 35 years and just won reelection in 2000, so we may have to endure his smirking presence in public life for several more years. “Candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome” he said at a Republican fundraiser.

                                                    He’s smirking at you, Donald.

Fox News, Illinois mayor blasts Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot's 'hypocrisy' after migrants shipped to 'Republican suburb' Turnabout is fair play. Republicans chortled when migrants were being sent to majority Democratic cities, but the Republican mayor of a Chicago suburb where migrants were recently dropped off is sputtering now. Much publicized efforts by the Texas governor and now Florida’s governor, both Republicans with national ambitions, to disperse migrants to northern Democratic enclaves is actually doing everybody a favor, in my view. The US does need more migrants, just not as many who actually want to come. Our population needs more workers though these irregular migrants won’t be authorized to work right away.

National Review, Buses of Illegal Immigrants Arrive outside Kamala Harris’s D.C. Residence

These were refugees from Venezuela, sent by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a group certainly deserving of help. Their country’s leadership has reduced Venezuela from being Latin America’s most prosperous country to a place of deprivation and political oppression.

Some 10,000 migrants have already been sent to DC. Actually, it’s good to disperse migrants around the country, not to have them all clustering at the border or only in southern states. And the migrants can also introduce new cultural practices and offer increased ethnic diversity to other communities.

Not to be outdone by Abbott, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who like Abbott, aspires to the US presidency, sent some migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, where they were cordially received, though felt confused about where they actually were. The migrants have since been moved to a military base on the mainland.

Are the state funds being used by Texas and Florida's Republican governors for migrant transport actually legally authorized? Are these 2 governors with presidential aspirations now eclipsing The Donald? It seems so. Below are some DeSantis supporters.

Amnesty International’s report on Haitian asylum seekers in the US, released on Sept. 22, is called ‘They Did Not Treat Us Like People’: Race and Migration-Related Torture and Other Ill-Treatment of Haitians Seeking Safety in the USA“It details how these human rights violations, along with mass expulsions under Title 42, are the latest chapter in a long history of detention, exclusion, and the practice of trying to deter Haitians seeking safety in the United States, rooted in systemic anti-Black discrimination.” A rally on behalf of Haitian migrants is being held by Amnesty activists on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on Sept. 22.

Amnesty Int’l in the UK has this to say about climate change: "The scale and the disproportionate impact of climate change on the most vulnerable is what makes this a human rights issue...Amnesty International UK has a unique role in the climate movement, which has primarily been seen as an environmental issue, to highlight the human rights impact of climate change and to place people at the forefront of climate justice."

Unpretentious, unthreatening Ukraine, after being aggressively attacked by a much bigger, more powerful, better-equipped Russia, is holding its own, albeit with outside help, including massive equipment expenditures and military advice from the US but without any foreign boots on the ground. Now Ukraine is even on the offensive in some parts of the country, turning the Russian label of “fascists” right back against the invaders. Of course, once the war is over, Ukraine will face a really massive rebuilding task. This war, like most wars, is unnecessarily destructive—in fact, nearly all wars are completely unnecessary period, except, perhaps to someone like Vladimir Putin.

NextShark, Taiwanese nursing home apologizes for hiring stripper to entertain disabled veterans
Disabled veterans in wheelchairs cheered wildly as a scantily-clad stripper (wearing a facemask) arrived to entertain them, a move roundly criticized by outsiders, but not by the veterans themselves who seemed to thoroughly enjoy her visit.

The nullifying of Roe vs. Wade, not unexpectedly, has aroused defensiveness among abortion providers and their supporters. Most Democrats are betting that “abortion rights” will incentivize women voters in Nov. "There are those in the [Republican] party who think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before," Nancy Pelosi mocked sarcastically. NPR and other mainstream outlets typically refer to pregnancy support centers as “anti-abortion rights” organizations. ABC News refers to “anti-abortion rights backers,” not simply to anti-abortion or pro-life advocates. Abortion is often touted by supporters as a purely “medical decision”. Political correctness still requires a sharp divide between the unborn and the live baby that emerges seconds later, whereas human

development actually follows a continuum.

“Access to abortion care is a fundamental right,” says a donation request coming into my Yahoo account right now. Funding for pregnancy crisis or help centers is needed more than ever, but where are the appeals for those organizations? Americans over 65 are predicted to soon outnumber children, so assistance and incentives for bearing and raising children are now needed more than ever.

Yahoo News, Sen. Lindsey Graham's abortion ban proposal roils Republicans, energizes Democrats  Graham’s proposal would ban most abortions after 15 weeks, not in itself a new idea. But this would be a national ban, not just in Graham’s home state of South Carolina, though it faces little likelihood of passage. In Germany and France, the abortion limit is 12 weeks with no big hue and cry there about that. By 15 weeks, actually almost 4 months, a woman should realize she is pregnant and have decided whether she wants to terminate the pregnancy. There could always be exceptions for rare circumstances. Graham’s abortion proposal doesn’t seem so extreme and I disagree with fellow Democrats who are loudly opposing it. But Republicans running for reelection would prefer to avoid that divisive subject altogether. Here in DC, I will continue to vote the straight Democratic ticket regardless; I don’t have the energy nor care for the public visibility required to open up a wider, more nuanced discussion of “abortion rights.” Probably Democratic officeholders are counting on those like myself who are less than enthusiastic about “abortion rights” not to jettison the party.

Of course, concern for children hardly ends with their birth. Too many parents leave a small child unattended in a car or bathtub. Raising a baby to adulthood is a long-haul proposition, as I know only too well after having been a single parent and the birth, adoptive, and foster mother of 5. And even in adulthood, when they are living far from you, you can lose them, as I found out with my older son and foster son.

NBC News, Second possible U.S. death from monkeypox reported in California (Deaths linked to monkeypox have occurred only in those with serious pre-existing conditions.)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday in a weekly report on monkeypox that a case analysis found that 61% of people in the U.S. who have developed the viral disease also had HIV or another sexually transmitted infection or disease...According to the World Health Organization, 98% of monkeypox cases outside Africa have involved men who have sex with men.

Pets of monkeypox victims have also come down with the illness, especially if pets sleep in their bed.

We may sometimes feel weary of conflict and struggles, but that’s always been the reality of life, with just a few respites of relaxation, pleasure, and fun between. At least that has been my experience in more than 8 decades. The honeymoon doesn’t last forever. If everything came to us without effort, we’d probably soon become bored and listless. Sports competitions and entertainment are created to keep our juices flowing vicariously. Humans are made for work and striving, or as we used to say when I worked at the occupational therapy association, everyone seeks purposeful activity.
