Stormy weather

Wow! A fierce summer storm has just devastated my old neighborhood in Washington, DC.

About 100 miles away here in West Virginia, we didn't even have much wind, just rain.

In an era of ever more flooding and rain, it's best just to keep your own rescue boat at the ready.

Far across the world in Nepal, another really big rainstorm erupted. Faint cries there prompted rescue workers to dig out a woman found buried under deep mud.

This green-painted house in Nepal has miraculously survived the floods.

Vaccination rates keep going down. What would you expect?

Data from the CDC and from individual states shows that vaccine rates have been plummeting, with many medical organizations citing rising vaccine hesitancy as a major cause. In Pennsylvania alone, the state health department has reported 540 measles cases this year and at least 2 fatalities, a count that RFK Jr.  had asked to have removed from the state's official tally of deaths of those unvaccinated, which then actually were removed and no longer show up.
A six-week-old child in Pennsylvania subsequently died of measles, as the Lancaster county coroner had determined, following two other measles-related deaths in the county that had already been removed by RFK Jr. He really didn't want to be blamed for those deaths after promoting vaccine hesitancy and avoidance, as he had been doing all along, so he just took all these deaths off the books. As the nation's Trump-appointed "heath czar", RFK Jr. has really not been promoting good health practices, in fact. just the exact opposite, but he doesn't want the public to know the actual the results of his very harmful advice.

Pa. Governor Josh Shapiro has challenged the health secretary's statements and actions.

Gov. Shapiro gets validation: A Pennsylvanian did die of measles

That death was shown to have occurred in an unvaccinated young child.

A six-week-old child in Pennsylvania died of measles, as the Lancaster county coroner has determined, a death now following two other measles-related deaths in the county last week.

A six-week-old child would have been too young to be vaccinated, but other people around him or her, could and should have been vaccinated. Everyone of an appropriate age should now be vaccinated, not only to protect themselves, but to protect others.

Reportedly, the Trump administration has been deporting fully legitimate, actual native-born American citizens just because they are Hispanic in a fierce racial profiling campaign that has now gone completely awry. Then it will take considerable money and legal maneuvering just to bring each one of those folks back. There are now so very many cases, but Donald Trump really doesn't care. Even if legitimate citizens are now being deported, Trump knows they won't be voting for him or his own cronies anyway, so best to just keep them all out for as long as possible. Mr. Trump will keep on playing dirty as long as he can get away with it.

The Hill --The data undercut a long-running claim by the Trump administration that it is targeting the “worst of the worst” by removing those with criminal records.

In fact, more than half of those arrested — 55 percent — had no interaction with law enforcement whatsoever, while another 24 percent have faced charges but were never convicted, according to data obtained by the Deportation Data Project. These statistics have raised reservations among some Republicans in Congress.

Right now too many people we really need here are being deported, including some who are actually US citizens.

Trump says Iran conflict, which has killed 18 US service members and injured hundreds more, is ‘small potatoes’

Not so small for the families who have lost their own loved ones. Just remember that Donald Trump is a guy who had evaded the draft by claiming phony "bone spurs."  Now he has been sending young people out to war, calling those being killed just "small potatoes."

Baby girl dies while camping with family in woods

A baby only 3 months old was really too young to be taken out camping and so she died.

Below is another baby who actually started barking back whenever the family dog barked at him.
Instead, this errant bomb wiped out a couple just making their wedding vows. Did they actually get married or not?

What does it mean if a regular email correspondent no longer responds? Did they just change their email address or did they perhaps actually die? If they are older folks of around my own age (88), the latter is most likely. This has been happening more frequently now with some friends living all around the world--no more responses. Then, one future day, a friend may try to contact me and get no reply. We are all getting older now, hour by hour, day by day, and none of us is ever getting any younger or will be living forever.  RIP

                                        These bright yellow deviled eggs look rather tasty;

so does this fruit and berry parfait.
My daughter in Florida, a wonderful cook, could make these items seen above and so much more, including them among the rotating dishes available from her website, Goodness. But the food will only arrive intact if you order it for delivery in Florida, as I have discovered the hard way.

I've often carried out a typical greeting used among Hispanic women, with each of us holding the other woman's elbows as she holds ours. There are still other Hispanic protocols for men greeting men and for men greeting women and also variations in different countries.

Here's what Google says: In several Latin American countries, women frequently substitute a traditional Western handshake with this tactile variation when greeting another woman.
Instead of joining palms, they reach forward to grasp each other’s elbows or forearms, often mirroring each other while leaning in for a single "air kiss" on the right cheek.

Yes, that's usually what we actually do.

Now, what is so endlessly fascinating about owls?
