Trump declares DC emergency

OK, I give up--we cannot avoid talking about Donald Trump, who now suggests renaming the Kennedy Center after himself.

Mr. Trump seems particularly vulnerable to manipulation by bad actors who often flatter him with praise and awards.

And may I say that posting on this platform is getting more and more challenging, with corrections very hard to implement. Correction attempts often just make matters worse.

So, dear readers, thanks for your understanding. I am trying to communicate with many friends all around the world.

Yahoo News

Trump invokes the Home Rule Act to take control of the Washington, D.C., police. What the act says he can and can't do.

The statute does not require evidence or congressional approval — only a presidential declaration of emergency.

So what is the big emergency now? The emergency is that Trump is upset and wants to exert more control over DC. Or maybe the real emerency is that the 79-year-old president has dementia, which runs in his famuily. So, Democrats, get your act together to go all out to promote Democratic candidates in the midterms, which unfortunately won't be taking place soon enough.

Trump says D.C. has been 'overtaken' by crime. The data tells a different story.

The president announced Monday that federal authorities would be taking control of the capital's police force.

The president’s description of crime in Washington, D.C. is not reflected in official statistics, which show that the city had its lowest violent crime rate in over 30 years in 2024. The rates of homicide, sexual abuse, assault with a dangerous weapon, and robbery all fell by at least 25% compared to 2023, according to statistics from the U.S. attorney’s office for the district. The total number of nonviolent property crimes in D.C. also dropped last year, according to FBI data.

Trmnp's own remarks came after a member of the Department of Government Efficiency was beaten in an attempted carjacking in Washington, which prompted the president's federal takeover of the city. The victim was Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old software engineer known by his online sobriquet, Big Balls, according to the police, who said he was surrounded and attacked by 10 young assailants outside his car.

As for the situaton in DC and the "tragic emergency" that Trump said impelled him to take over control of the city, he did not specify the emergency, but probably it was the Coristine matter. “This is a tragic emergency, and it’s embarrassing for me to be up here,” the president told reporters.

NY Times, Trump Takes Control of D.C. Police, Citing ‘Bloodthirsty Criminals.’ But Crime Is Down. The president has railed against crime in urban, largely liberal cities for decades, but Monday’s announcement was an extraordinary exertion of federal power over an American city.

“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs, and homeless people,” President Trump now claims, ignoring the falling crime rate in Washington. Regardless of the facts, he is going forward with this new crusade anyway, and doing it all alone, without Melania, Don Jr., Eric, Ivanka, or Elon Musk. DC residents have reacted, now turning the spotlight on the president himself.

Trump also has announced: "You know, I’m going to see Putin. I’m going to Russia on Friday." He added, " I don’t like being up here, talking about how unsafe and how dirty and disgusting this once-beautiful capital [is].”

Actually, where Trump was not going to Russia after all, but to Alaska. It takes some effort to figure out exactly whatever he is talking about.

One of my contacts comments:

.Trump has a coterie of folks that amplify his craziness. Magnifying whatever Trump says is the new new thing, very shameful.

Al Jazeera, Updates: Global outrage grows after Israel kills Al Jazeera staff in Gaza
Apparently this was a targeted killing, probably a war crime. Do we have to wait until Trump is out of office to sanction Israel?

Reportedly, Israeli citizens are more concerned now about the release of their hostages than about their government's killings of journalists and civilians in Gaza.

Javier Milei’s "Shock Therapy" Is Working Argentina’s budget cuts have generated eye-popping results: lower inflation, higher wages, and the nation’s first budget surplus in 12 years.

But is there also a down side?

CADAL: Rising authoritarianism in Argentina?

What is striking is the support Milei enjoys from people who, until very recently, looked to European democracies characterized by high levels of institutionality, government transparency, private economic initiative, and social inclusion. Centrists were being accused of being enablers of Kirchnerism. But now the exact opposite can be argued: that centrist sectors are enabling authoritarianism.
