A former DC neighbor just sent me an image of a patriotic arrangement on display near his home,
Have Mamdani and Trump now become friends? Yet Trump stayed seated when they shook hands.
Trump had once accused the South African government of discriminating against white South Africans, prompting him to invite them to come to the US. It's hard to predict what the impulsive, mercurial Mr. Trump might decide to say or do next. He may at times even surprise himself.
Various "pig" images of Donald Trump have now appeared after his order to a female reporter: "Quiet, Piggy."
California Governor Gavin Newsom posted the image below of Trump after he had told a female reporter: "Quiet, Piggy."

Several "Quiet Piggy" t-shirts have since emerged.

Another female White House reporter (Mary Bruce) had asked the president about his decision to host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in light of the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Ms. Bruce also asked the president about the Epstein files, after which, Trump called her a “terrible person and a terrible reporter.”
Trump's press secretary, attempting damage control, said that everyone should now “appreciate the frankness and the openness” being expressed by the president.
Donald Trump also recently claimed on Truth Social that he has achieved the "HIGHEST POLL NUMBERS OF MY 'POLITICAL CAREER,'” despite multiple recent polls showing his approval rating is actually at a record low for his second term.
(Trump had perhaps been fed fake poll numbers by his staff just to protect his fragile demented ego.)
President Trump's disapproval rating has hit its highest point of his second term.
But Mr. Trump may remain unaware of his unpopularity because his staff still struggle daily to protect a failing president fast sinking into dementia. (Can they successfully keep up their valiant efforts for 3 more long years?)

In a recent BBC interview, the former vice-president said she still isn't done with politics and could 'possibly' be the next US president and the first woman president (or at least give that valiant effort another try). .

Yes, I voted for Harris last time and
would do so again. So, let's actually get her into the presidency this next time around! I also had voted for Hillary. (Men in political office have not really been doing a very good job at all lately.)

Number of children abducted from Catholic school in Nigeria explodes to over 300

For hundreds, even thousands, of years, humans have been developing sophisticated cultures, with written language, religion, artifacts, pottery, tapestries, and jewelry expressing their core values and cultural beliefs. Our current era is just one short blip in the long trajectory of human history, with so much more yet to come. Perhaps those living at any particular moment tend to believe that they are at the apex of world progress, having developed the most advanced form of human civilization, but there is a great deal--so much more--still yet to come.
ABC News, Archaeologists lift the lid on a 1,700-year-old Roman sarcophagus hidden in Budapest
Archaeologists in Budapest have unearthed a well-preserved Roman sarcophagus, revealing insights into the life of a young woman from 1,700 years ago.
In keeping with Roman funerary customs, the sarcophagus held an array of objects: two completely intact glass vessels, bronze figures, 140 coins, a bone hair pin, a piece of amber jewelry and traces of gold-threaded fabric, along with the size of the skeleton, which all point to the grave belonging to a young woman. The objects were “items given to the deceased by her relatives for her eternal journey.”

For over 17 years, I worked at the American Occupational Therapy Association in Bethesda, Md., just outside of Washington, DC. I am not actually an occupational therapist myself, but a former social worker and juvenile probation officer, yet still with much professional experience in common with occupational therapists. The focus of occupational therapists (OTs) is to assist patients/clients seeking to engage in purposeful activity-- considered purposeful, that is, by the individual actually involved. I not only gave trainings at conferences, but wrote for a weekly magazine and also provided sections of professional books. I feel I learned a lot and contributed a lot regarding the occupational therapy profession in the process. After the untimely, very impactful consecutive deaths of my older son and Cuban foster son, followed by the quite shockingly painful and abrupt departure of my late blind husband of 24 years, whose career success was partly bolstered by my daily efforts, I then sought a completely radical life change. So in 1990, at age 62, I joined the Peace Corps as a health volunteer in Honduras. My 3 surviving children were ready to take over their own lives and I was ready to embark on a brand new challenge in a totally new environment. Already bilingual in English and Spanish from an early age, I chose to serve in a Spanish-speaking country. Even now after my Peace Corps service, I have continued with my own health and rehabilitation projects in Honduras, returning there annually, most recently in June 2024, as reported here on this blog, honduraspeacecorps2.blogspot.com
I have taken a new wheelchair to donate there at each visit, as wheelchairs are not made in Honduras, though surely they could be. But few Hondurans would then be willing to buy one, still preferring the imported variety.
Meanwhile, after Peace Corps, between missions to Honduras, I then worked part-time as an on-call Spanish interpreter in the DC area, a very interesting and varied job that I gave up only at start of the pandemic. Having first learned Spanish as a child traveling with my family in Latin America, I have been told that I still don't have a gringo accent. But my passport has now expired so, at age 87, I am not sure about ever getting another.
I'm living these days in rural West Virginia with my son, without any local opportunities for Spanish interpreting. In fact, the only time I have even spoken Spanish here is at the local Mexican restaurant to the evident surprise of waitstaff working there. My son, adopted from Colombia, just like his siblings, had resisted learning Spanish, which I'd tried to teach to all my kids. My late ex-husband of 24 years, who was blind, was also not interested in learning Spanish, and had encouraged our 4 kids to resist my Spanish instruction efforts, one of many examples of us not being on the same page as a couple, which finally led to his departure and to our very contentious and painful divorce.
But here I am now at age 87, still adapting to a new environment and a new life.
