Mother's Day and beyond

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there. We have a hard job. but it's a job we really love! We certainly wouldn't have it any other way.

Those simple Mother's Day greetings don't really need a Google translator.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

A more somber message came in from Nely, a close friend in Honduras whose mother I knew there. Her mohter's name was Zonia Hernández. Nely now tells me that her mother, age 66, had suddenly keeled over and died several days ago. She'd seemed like such a strong, sturdy, lady when I last saw her 2 years ago. I had just sent daughter Nely a Mother's Day greeting and this was her reply:

Muchas gracias Bárbara, si es la mañana del día de las Madres, no será un buen día ya que mi Madre falleció el 21 de abril, le dio un derrame isquemico cerebral y le provocó un infarto fulminante, realmente fue algo que no esperábamos 😔siento que es un mal sueño.

I told her: Nely: Aqui estan dos fotos con mama en junio 2024 cuando parecio fuerte y saludable.
Siento mucho que ahora se nos haya ido,
Barbara

Two photos appear below of me with Nely's Mom in June 2024, first with her standing, beside me, then embracing me on a couch, and finally a third photo of her casket just now in late April 2026. RIP, Zonia.

When I was at the beauty parlor recently, sitting right there in the salon chair just ahead of me was a man getting his ear hairs trimmed. What? Wow! Can ears grow hair? I never knew that ear hairs were a thing. Maybe even Donald Trump has hair in his ears?

Here is what Google says:

Hair in ears (auricular hypertrichosis) is a common, harmless, age-related condition, primarily affecting men due to testosterone changes. While it acts as a natural barrier against debris, thick or long hairs (terminal hairs) can be removed for cosmetic reasons. Common, safe removal methods include specialized electric trimmers, plucking, or waxing.

So now at age 88, I've just learned something new--about hair in ears! Wow!

Most Americans say Trump is mentally, physically unfit to serve effectively: Poll

Yet, a rather small majority of American voters actually chose him as our president in the last election, with now more than 2 1/2 years still left to go. Some Trump voters now are regretting their choice. A lot can still happen in the next 2 1/2 years under President Trump, so are we all going to make it? The prospects are uncertain as the guy is so unpredictable, so we'll just have to wait and see and do whatever we can to try to counteract him. Here locally, gas prices have continued going up. Not long ago, gas was $2.99 a gallon, but is now it's been rising inexorably toward $5.00, thanks or no thanks to Donald J. Trump.

President Trump said in a phone interview with CBS News Monday morning that he aims to suspend the federal gas tax "for a period of time."

While Trump often snoozes during the day, he is a regular night owl often keeping his staff awake into the wee  hours.

New wave of ICE deployments could impact more than 40 states

This Trump policy, like so many of his ideas, is quite detrimental to our national interests, as well as to the very individuals caught up in it. Our country would actually benefit from having more immigrants, not fewer, as has been discussed before on this blog.

Apparently Donald Trump, whose own wife and mother have been immigants, both lacking proper papers, still thinks immigrants don't belong here and that we don't actually need them. That is obviously not true, or they wouldn't even be coming. Our country simply does not have enough working-age folks and is not producing enough babies able to grow up to become working-age in a couple of decades. So, yes, here right now, we still need immigrants and immigrants also need jobs, which is a fair exchange, just basic supply and demand.

No country in the world has ever created a workable immigration system. Obviously, the doors cannot be flung wide open, but ingenious folks who have managed to somehow get into our country should be permitted to stay, as we really do need them or else they wouldn't even be here now.

DOJ moves to strip citizenship of 12 people amid denaturalization push

In a rarely used procedure, the Trump administration has moved to strip US citizenship from 12 individuals. They are accused of various crimes, including immigration fraud, though over decades, denaturalization has been invoked only for a very few individuals.

The Trump administration has announced "zero tolerance" for immigration fraud. Employees in the DOJ’s civil division have been directed to “maximally pursue" denaturalization proceedings against illegal migrants. The administration is assigning denaturalization cases to regular prosecutors, which could lead to a surge of people being stripped of U.S. citizenship.

Online commentators have suggested that this process should now be applied to both Melania and Elon Musk, whose citizenship was obtained under questionable circumstances, such as after a visitor's visa had already expired. So let's start right now with removing the citizenship of Melania and Elon and deporting them both back to their countries of origin.

These days, folks are not only being deported, but many actually born in our country are now leaving on their own.

I refer to you article In the New Yorker (Dec. 15, 2026) entitled "How To Leave the USA."

Single and married Americans, some even with children, are establishing new lives in Europe, planning to stay at least for the duration of Trump's presidency, going there now in a reverse migration.

California farmers must destroy 420,000 peach trees after Del Monte closes its canneries and cancels more than $550 million in long-term contracts

This seems like such a waste in a hungry world with peaches being so very yummy and just so darn peachy!

Google says:

Peaches are low-calorie, nutrient-dense stone fruits packed with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins (especially A and C).

CBS News, Trump wants to suspend the federal gas tax. How much would that help drivers? Not very much as other taxes would need to be raised to make up the difference.

Israeli strike kills seven in south Lebanon, Lebanese health ministry says

Trump has given Israel and Netanyahu carte blanche to do whatever they want, not limited to just Israel/Iran, now even killing a Lebanese child, in this case.

Israeli troops are raping and sexually torturing Palestinians. Trump and other Reublicans have not called out against this ongoing abuse.

Gooogle says:Since October 2023, numerous reports from international organizations and human rights groups have documented systematic sexual violence and torture committed by Israeli forces against Palestinian detainees. These allegations include rape, forced nudity, sexual humiliation, and physical abuse specifically targeting genitals.

Trump admits the war with Iran is not settled, but he's just taking a breather right now.

The End of Sherritt: A Victory for Helms-Burton and the Power of Targeted Sanctions

(Leer en Español)

After more than three decades of open defiance, Sherritt International—the Canadian company dubbed by Bloomberg in 1995 and once hailed as Fidel Castro’s “favorite capitalist”—has been forced out of Cuba. On May 7, 2026, Sherritt announced the immediate suspension of all its direct operations in the island’s joint ventures. The trigger was President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14404, signed on May 1,

Google travel advisory, Ethiopia

No, it is not safe to travel to much of Ethiopia today, and the overall travel environment remains highly volatile.

The U.S. Department of State maintains a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory for the country, alongside specific Level 4: Do Not Travel warnings for several entire regions.

Yes, I have often traveled to Ethiopia, and from there going to elsewhere in Africa.

Wash. Post, She fled genital mutilation in Togo. The U.S. deported her.

I've met African women who have undergone the procedure, undertaken to make sure they don't become unfaithful wives. However, I was told by several that some sensation still remains. The result is problems with sexual intercourse and especially with childbirth.
Of course, the preumption is that women only exist to serve the interests and pleasure of men.

African penguins (also known as jackass penguins) are the only penguins found in Africa, inhabiting the sunny, granite-bouldered coasts of South Africa, particularly in Cape Town. The most famous colony resides at Boulders Beach, a protected area in Table Mountain National Park where visitors can watch, and occasionally swim with, the endangered birds.===================================================
Patrick, a retired high-school Spanish teacher who served with me in the Peace Corps in Honduras, lives in Charleston, West Virginia's state capital, in his house seen below.

Charleston, the state capital, has a higher elevation than Berkeley Springs, our own location, and so gets much more snow.

Here is Patrick in his classroom discussing countries all around the world where he has traveled. Retired now from regular teaching, he is on-call as a substitute.

Unfortunately, folks, because of where I live now, I can no longer do jobs like the following on offer today, but I still appreciate being on the call roster. I had really enjoyed Spanish medical interpretation work, with almost every assignment providing a new challenge and evoking a wide range of human emotions. I often confronted very difficult situations that few of us ever encounter in regular daily life. But we interpreters are sworn to secrecy, so I cannot provide examples.

Some small oddities in these postings simply resist correction. I have been a book author and an editor, also a translator, meticulous about mistakes, but the blog is a completely different platform, so we all need to be flexible, both writer and readers.
